Plant Problems
Plants are tough, but sometimes things go wrong. Much like human medicine, plant pathology and pest identification is a complex subject, made more difficult by the fact that plants can't tell you what hurts, how they feel, or what bit them!
For this reason it isn't practical to try to solve your problems on one page. We suggest you pop in and have a chat to Anna from the Manor, our expert on pests and diseases, who doesn't just know what's wrong, but how to fix it.
Feeding and Fertilizers ...
There is one plant problem that is worth a mention here and now, because it involves a problem that is common at the planting stage ...
Don't add fertilizer on planting or potting up!
Most garden soils contain enough nutrients, and all the proprietary composts are well balanced. Too much fertilizer burns new roots! Better to top dress your garden with organic compost or mulch once the plants are established. Plants in tubs might need feeding a couple of times during the growing season ... apply the feed to moist soil, following the instructions carefully. Don't feed plants during the winter. At best, you're wasting your money ... at worst, you'll kill your plant!
If an existing plant looks sick ... again ... DON'T feed it! Think how you would feel if you were force fed on steak in a rich cream sauce while recuperating ... too much! If the roots have been damaged by harsh weather or overwatering, extra fertilizer will kill them completely. Talk to them tenderly by all means, but let them settle.
Watering ...
It is essential to water plants in thoroughly on planting. Don't just wet the leaves, give them a really stiff drink ... enough to settle the soil around the roots. For the first few months after planting, you may need to water them in order to help them establish. After the first year, trees and shrubs planted out in the ground can usually fend for themselves.
Shrubs in tubs will need regular watering, especially during a hot spell. However problems can be caused by over-watering as much as by over-feeding ... if in doubt, dry it out!
