Shrubs at Manor Nurseries
Manor Nurseries is proud to offer an extensive range of hardy shrubs, the majority of which are propagated and grown at our own nursery in Yapton. As well as the usual garden favourites, we focus on what's looking good at the time ... maybe it's flowers or berries ... winter stems ... seasonal fruit ... autumn foliage or all-year-round evergreens ... we do our best to find it!
On the sidebar to the left, under Additional Pages, you will find a list of the shrubs we usually have in stock. That page is currently under construction, with photo links to follow.
The shrub beds are in A-Z order. The plant labels on the backboards are there to give you help finding the right plant for the right place. And to help guide you to the right row, we've made some large alphabet letters.
Hedging plants are along the back, near the Leylandii hedge. This includes some of the larger shrubs, which don't fit on the A-Z area ... things like Eleagnus, Rhamnus, Ligustrum (Privet), Griselinia, Pyracantha and Laurel. For hints and tips on planting a hedge, see our Hedging Plants page in the Plants for Purposes section of this website.

Summer flowers!
Things have gone haywire this year. Forsythias bloomed in the autumn, Azaleas bloomed over Christmas, then the Forsythias bloomed again in March! Weird.
In the meantime, pretty pink and red Weigelas are just beginning to flower... while the bright blue Ceanothus next to sunshine yellow Cytisus look amazing!
Azaleas and Rhododendrons flower in succession right through until June.
Our favourite shrub of the month ...
We've just taken delivery of a super selection of Hebes and hardy Fuchsias ...
A Tapestry of Leaves!
Visualize a tapestry of evergreen foliage ... rich colours and different textures create a beautiful background for a display of summer flowers, which in winter becomes the display itself. Dark, shady corner? Where flowers fail, many of the golden evergreens thrive ....
Yellows ... golden splashed Aucuba 'Crotonifolia' ... or for something smaller, Euonymus 'Emerald n' Gold' ... Choisya ternata 'Sundance' or 'Goldfinger' ... Abelia 'Francis Mason'. Escallonia 'Gold Ellen' combines flowers and foliage with its red blooms against bright yellow leaves.
Silver and grey ... Euonymus 'Emerald Gaiety' or 'Microphyllus Albovariegatus' always look good ... Rhamnus ... Abelia 'Confetti' ... Pittosporums. Hot, sunny border? Cool it down with silvery Brachyglottis 'Sunshine', Lavender, Perovskia and Teucrium ...
Purples ... Pittosporums and Myrtus both come in a range of colours, including purple. Photinia 'Red Robin' adds a rich red ... and its smaller cousin, Photinia x fraseri 'Nana' is a perfect shrub for a tub. Look out for the new pink-variegated Photinia 'Pink Marble' ...
Think texture! Long and pointed ... Phormiums, Dianella, and Astelia.
Architectural ... big fat Fatsia leaves next to skinny saw-toothed Pseudopanax ...
Feathery ... how about working in a few dwarf conifers? The retro look! In fashion back in the 70s, they went out with flares and shell suits ... and now they're enjoying a revival! Interplant them with dwarf Heathers ...
Stems!
Cornus springs to mind ... bright red or yellow stems against fresh white snow ... or bright green Kerria japonica ... or the silvery white Rubus thibetanus 'Silver Fern' ...
Tree bark, so many different kinds ... silvery suedes, snakeskins, deep brown slivers of paper ... rough, smooth, corky, soft or spiny ... each is like a fingerprint belonging to that tree alone.
Small garden?
Shrubs can look good in tubs ... dwarf conifers, Sarcococca, Viburnum tinus, Pieris ...
Ow ... ouch! Security hedging ...
The legal way to protect your property from intruders! Berberis, Pyracantha, Mahonia, Rubus ...
